Panayia tou Araka - the church of Our Lady of the Pea - is a superb example and one of ten painted churches on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list. It is located on a terrace near the village of Lagoudera, surrounded by trees and wild peas from which it takes its name, with a superb view down the valley. The church with its vibrant colours and the number of the frescoes, from the 12th cebtury, will take your breath away.

Ayios Nikolaos tis Stegis (St. Nicolas of the Roofs) stands about 5km above the village and once belonged to a monastery. It is completely painted with murals dating from the 11th to the 17th century and is considered one of the most interesting Byzantine churches on the island. It gets its name from the steep pitched wooden roof which was built to protect it from climatological conditions.

For those interested in cultural heritage, Profitis Elias Church is worth visiting. This church was built in the Byzantine style to replace a small room that was being used as a church. It is well worth the walk to the church and the climb to the top (about 100 steep stone steps) to admire the breathtaking view of Protaras and the surrounding countryside. In the evenings the church is lit up.
