Protaras is situated between Cape Greco and the village of Paralimni, less than one hour drive from Larnaca International Airport. It boasts the fabulous Fig Tree Bay, which stretches over 10 miles of sandy beach, one of the finest on the island of Cyprus. This is a more calm resort compared to Ayia Napa even though it is only 10 minutes away by car.

The town of Protaras with its golden white sand and crystal clear waters offers a complete stress-free life. Protaras was once a little village that relied on agriculture and fishing, it is now however becoming independent from the land and sea. With many tavernas, great fish restaurants and international cuisine, Protaras is truly a place to relax in. The town also offers a good choice of shops, nightclubs and bars.

Things to do:

1. Boat trips

Boat trips run along the coast from Protaras. One way is to Cape Greco, where you can take swim from the boat; the other way - to view the ghost town of Famagusta. You can also take a trip on one of the many glass-bottomed boats in the area; perfect for seeing all the underwater action.

2. Snorkeling & Diving

The rocky coastline of Cape Greco at Protaras offers great places for snorkeling and diving.

3. Hiking

There are a number of scenic trails in Protaras. Hiking in Protaras along the coastal path is not too taxing and you will pass some impressive cliffs, sea caves and historic Roman ruins. The views along the coastal path are stunning and even a half-day exploring this route is well worth the time.

4. Watersports

The warm, turquoise waters of Protaras are perfect for swimming and relaxing on pedalos. If you enjoy more active sports such as paragliding and water-skiing then you won't be disappointed.

5. Nightlife

Protaras is a family friendly area, but it can turn into a real party place when the night draws in. The nightlife in Protaras is probably second only to Ayia Napa with plenty of bars and nightclubs. Protaras is more spread out, so there is plenty of space should anyone fancy a quiet night.

6. Profitis Elias Church

For those interested in cultural heritage, Profitis Elias Church is worth visiting. This church was built in the Byzantine style to replace a small room that was being used as a church. It is well worth the walk to the church and the climb to the top (about 100 steep stone steps) to admire the breathtaking view of Protaras and the surrounding countryside. In the evenings the church is lit up.

7. Cape Greco

For most of the visitors it is a thrilling experience to climb this gigantic rock to the top, where one can enjoy the magnificent views or even watch a spectacular sunset or sunrise. The place is located between Protaras and Agia Napa near the coast.

8. Ocean Aquarium

The Aquarium consists of three main sections: the fish section, the outdoor area and the penguin house. The fish section is the largest, and includes 400 different species of marine life from all over the world, including corals, sharks, eels, piranhas, stingrays and other small sea urchins and creatures. The outdoor section, in addition to the wonderful gardens, includes 2 pools for large fish, a crocodile arena, a turtle area, and a café, which is in the centre. The penguin house is very popular with children.
